Hello, my name’s Drew Ellingson and I am a filmmaker & multimedia artist based out of Minneapolis, MN.
As an artist, I strive to push the boundaries of whatever medium I make my art through, exploring new and unexpected directions that attempt to challenge conventions, expectations and cliches or as John Cassavetes puts it, “Films today show only a dream world and have lost touch with the way people really are... In this country, people die at 21. They die emotionally at 21, maybe younger... My responsibility as an artist is to help people get past 21... The films are a roadmap through emotional and intellectual terrain that provides a solution on how to save pain.” My work serves as an invitation for the audience to engage with the beauty, absurdity, and contradictions of life, death, love, and everything in between.
I am drawn to stories that expose hidden truths, celebrate human resilience, and embrace both the dark and the humorous aspects of the material world because those aspects are either suppressed or ignored by polite society for various reasons. But art exists to challenge, to provoke, and to hold up a mirror to the realities we often shy away from. I’m not afraid of backlash for confronting these themes because someone has to, and if no one is willing, then who will?
Whether through narrative films, documentaries, music, or multimedia projects, I aim to craft experiences that are thought provoking, stir emotion, and leave a lasting impression on whoever is watching and/or experiencing it.
